He drove the Spanish from northern South America but then a couple years later his dream of a united South America collapsed. He eventually returned to Venezuela in 1807 and saw that the population was divided between Spain and independence. By the time Napoleon invaded Spain and imprisoned their King, the spaniards felt they didn't owe any allegiance to their home country. This was called the Independence Movement.  On April 19, 1810 the Caracas people declared provisional independence. Bolivar advocated for full independence and was dispatched to England for support of the British government. When his wife died he returned back to Europe with Napoleon. He joined Napoleon's resistance movement.  He traveled to Britain on a diplomatic mission and declared himself a dictator. Simon Bolivar is known as 'The Liberator' for liberating his home from Spanish rule. Bolivar eventually got defeated and went into exile, where he then went to New Granada (Colombia) to look for a commission as an officer in the growing independence movement there. He attacked ALL Spanish forces and his army grew. When he was headed to Venezuela he had in mind that he was going to march in and start a war. They were prepared with a few smaller armies, but what they didn't expect, was Bolivar fleeing to Caracas. It paid off because he rode victoriously, as the head of the army, into Caracas on August 7, 1813. This was called the Admirable Campaign.
